Neither my sister nor my brother nor I can remember why it’s called Special Salad, except maybe because it took a kind of a long time to prepare, so we didn’t have it very often, and that made it special. These days with food processors it might be considered a little less special, but be careful when using a food processor to make it, because you can very easily end up with special soup instead of salad.
Our parents had a bachelor friend when they lived in Gainesville and he made it for them. Chop up lettuce, tomato, cucumber, onion, celery, carrots, and radishes. Add italian dressing (low fat works fine), fetid cheese and capers.
My dad used to make this salad and he was always so proud when he did. We normally serve it with elk steaks and baked potatoes.
